About Short Hills

Stylish Residential living
Millburn-Short Hills has been able to retain its country appeal despite its easy access to the city. The towns grew in the early days, by offering city dwellers respite from the heat during the summers.

The towns have a wealth of architectural styles: Gothic Revival, Italianate. During the late 1900’s a host of delightful Queen Anne style mansions were built for the wealthy New Yorkers on land formerly used for farming.

Following the turn of the century, noteworthy architects started to create the town’s Arts and Crafts homes, and the by the 1920’s and 30’s European and Tudors began to appear. Many of these homes are registered as historic landmarks now.

The town has continued to grow and thrive with many new styles of homes.

The Wyoming and South Mountain sections are steeped in local history, winding streets and wonderful landscaping. These friendly neighborhoods are all within walking distance of the town.

A History of Residential living
Millburn was first settled through agriculture which slowly evolved by the start of the 19th Century as a mill and factory community before it became more residential in Victorian times.

Millburn’s history is evident through the wonderful homes and quaint districts.

Milburn became its own separate township in 1857 having split from the earlier Newark and later Springfield settlements.

The towns of Milburn and Short Hills have been influenced by the nature of the land itself. In fact the name Short Hills came from the trails around the small hills made by the Lanape Indians. The streams that ran between those hills would bring power to the mills and factories of the 19th Century.

Industry came after the Revolution when the land changed from agriculture over to lumber and paper helped by the locally present ponds. In fact the first paper mill was established here in 1790 by a Scott’s man. Paper kept most of the mills busy including the building that is now the Paper Mill Playhouse.

In fact it was the towns mills and streams, or “burns” in Scottish, that gave the town its name.

In 1835 the Morris and Essex Railroad was completed which enabled the residents to be connected through the North East.

The railroad brought more people to the town and the surrounding area. In the late 1800’s two new residential suburbs grew up. Inventor Stewart Hartshorn purchased over 1500 acres in order to build what would become the first planned suburb in America. This town was called Short Hills.
